I am delighted, and feel privileged, to have been appointed Headteacher of Sydenham School. I took up my role at the start of September 2016. The school community is a vibrant one, throughout which the quality of relationships are excellent. I have been teaching for over 30 years mainly in south London which is where I also live. I am very pleased to be able to make a contribution to my local community and Sydenham School is very much an inclusive, comprehensive, community school. I have previously been Headteacher of a school in Ealing and hope to bring my experience and learning from there to positively inform my leadership of Sydenham School.
Our summer results at both GCSE and post 16 were the best ever achieved by Sydenham School. They were also the highest achieved in the borough at both Key Stages. These are very strong and exciting foundations on which to build. My vision for Sydenham School is that it becomes a world class school in which every student is given the opportunity and support to excel and in which the vast majority perform highly in all areas reliably, year on year. Learning and teaching is at the heart of all that we do and ensuring that this is outstanding across the board is our number one priority.
The brand new state of the art STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) building and the beautifully renovated Edwardian building symbolise the great opportunities for growth and innovation which are necessarily however, rooted in our history and valued traditions. But the greatest asset of any school of course, are the people - students, staff, Governors and families. I look forward to actively working with all of these stakeholders during the forthcoming years to ensure that Sydenham School continues to provide an excellent education for all of its students.
Sydenham has a long tradition of educating girls, often pioneering innovation and development. We believe that creativity inspires, evokes learning and enables students to make connections across subjects, between our school and other schools, as well as the local community and the wider world. Student achievement is at the centre of all we do.
Sydenham School is a STEM school – with strengths in Science and Mathematics and an additional focus on Technology and Engineering. Equally committed to the Arts, Humanities and Languages, we provide a curriculum which is broad, exciting and challenges students, across the full range of national expectations.
By bringing together teaching programmes, imaginative projects, events and Development opportunities, our aim is to offer our girls the chance to see how the world and society could be different. We want our students to feel empowered to make their own decisions and to be confident and motivated to learn, to perform and make things happen.
To achieve this, we have a strong vision and expectation of every student is high. We nurture each individual to help her explore her own talents and make sure that she makes the most of all the opportunities available. When she leaves Sydenham, the young girl has become a young woman.
